From the Latin “open your soul,” Aperi Animam is a professional Milwaukee-based choral ensemble dedicated to the creation and performance of uniquely atmospheric musical experiences that have an impact on lives and learning throughout the Midwest.

Bringing to a perfect life great and evocative music of—and inspired by—the past thousand years, we invite audiences to quiet their minds and open their souls.

THIS WEEKEND

Our first concert will explore sacred music from the Spanish colonial period, particularly from Latin America, with a strong emphasis on polyphony and choral works rooted in Catholic liturgical traditions.

The program tells a story of the religious and cultural synthesis of colonial Latin America, where European sacred music traditions were merged with local artistic expressions. The overarching theme of spirituality, identity, and cultural exchange, highlights how the divine (through pneuma, or spirit) was interpreted through music during this period by influential European composers like Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla and Alonso Lobo alongside the indigenous voice of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Our musical selections showcase the vitality of Latin Americans in shaping life and cultural identity in the Spanish New World.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

Save $5 over the door price by purchasing early. (Student and artist admission is always $10 or pay-what-you-can.)

APERI ANIMAM presents their 24|25 season...

We are excited to introduce our 2024-2025 season, themed PNEUMA. In Greek philosophy, as well as in medical and theological traditions, pneuma signifies "breath," "spirit," and the essential "vital force" that animates life. It is also deeply connected to the divine, often representing the Spirit of God in religious contexts. This season, we aim to explore the profound energy that flows through us all, examining how it is shaped and transformed by the many experiences that define our lives.
